MARSHALL, Minn. - Alison Nagel's career-high 28 points led Southwest Minnesota State over Crown College 101-43 on Monday night in the Mustangs' season opener. It was the first time that SMSU has scored 100 points in a game since scoring 105 versus Minnesota-Morris on Dec. 19, 2008. Nagel played just 16 minutes in the game.
SMSU (1-0) scored 53 points in the first half -- marking the first time the Mustangs have scored 50+ points in a half since scoring 51 versus Dordt on Nov. 17, 2009.
SMSU finished the game shooting 45.7 percent (37-81), including 9 of 31 behind the arc. SMSU's 37 field goals made was the most since connecting on 36 versus Minnesota Crookston on Feb. 6, 2010.
Annessa Rosch tied a career-high by scoring 17, while
Bree Holleman rounded out SMSU's double-digit scorers with her 12 points.
Fourth-year head coach
Allison Kruger got double-digit minutes from 11 players and her bench out-scored the Storm's 43-11.
Hannah Beeler grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds in the win and finished just two points shy of her first career double-double.
SMSU finished with 58 rebounds in the contest -- the first time securing 50+ rebounds in a game since grabbing 50 against Bemidji State on Jan. 22, 2011. SMSU out-rebounded Crown 58-33 for a margin of +25 -- the largest margin since outrebounding Clarke (Iowa) by the same margin on Dec. 29, 2009.
SMSU forced 28 turnovers in the game, while recording 15 steals. The 28 turnovers forced was the most since forcing 27 versus Upper Iowa on Dec. 17, 2011.
SMSU passed the ball well all game long to find the open player and it showed in the box score as the Mustangs racked up 21 assists - led by Holleman's six.
11 of the 13 Mustangs that played in the game recorded points, including
Kendra Snaza who scored her first collegiate point at the 9:06 mark in the second half to put SMSU up 51. Snaza scored five points in her first collegiate action -- finishing 2 of 3 from the floor.
SMSU will travel to the west coast for a pair of games in California. SMSU will face Notre de Namur (Calif.) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. central time before taking on Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday at 4 p.m. central time.Â
