BELMONT, Calif. – Southwest Minnesota State suffered its first loss of the 2013-14 season on Saturday when the Mustangs fell to California State Monterey Bay 57-45. SMSU started the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
Allison Nagel recorded her first career double-double as the senior forward netted 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Nagel finished with 10 points despite finishing just 3 of 13 from the floor.
SMSU struggled in the second half as the Mustangs shot 8 of 32 (25.0%), including 2 of 13 from behind the arc.
SMSU carried over the hot shooting from last night's 80-51 victory over Notre Dame (Calif.) into the first 12 minutes of the game as the Mustangs built a 21-11 lead with 8:18 to go in the first half. The Mustangs would score just two points the rest of the half as CSUMB went on a 15-2 run in the remaining eight minutes and took a 26-23 lead into the break.
The Mustangs would get a bucket to open the second half to cut the lead to one. The game would remain a one point game at the 13:01 mark when
Hope Bonlander made good on a layup but CSUMB would respond with a 13-2 run to pull away.
CSUMB finished the game 23 of 62 including 5 of 14 from the 3-point line. SMSU owned the advantage on the boards – outrebounding CSUMB 46-40 but committed six more turnovers (16-10).
Bonlander finished the game with nine rebounds – one away from her first career double-double.
SMSU will be back in action on Nov. 22, when the Mustangs travel to take on South Dakota Tech in Rapid City, S.D.
