Cold second half shooting dooms SMSU in setback to USF

MARSHALL, Minn. -
The University of Sioux Falls held Southwest Minnesota State to just 29 percent shooting in the second half and earned a 66-53 victory on Saturday in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball.

USF (6-4, 2-4 NSIC) snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory and was led by Jaicee Ulmer's 20 points.
Hannah Beeler led SMSU in points for the first time this season as the senior forward collected 12 points on 5 of 8 shooting. Alison Nagel, who came into the game with double-figure scoring in all previous nine games, finished with just nine points and seven rebounds.

Midway through the first half, Bree Holleman connected on her 122nd career 3-point field goal to pass Tori Fink for fifth most in school history.

SMSU (2-8, 0-6 NSIC) dropped its eighth straight game and sixth straight in conference play.

SMSU held USF to 34.8 percent shooting (24 of 69), including just 6 of 26 from downtown, but the Cougars turned the ball over just seven times and in turn held SMSU to just 32.8 shooting (19 of 58). SMSU finished 3 of 17 from 3-point land.

SMSU will break for the rest of the calendar year before picking action back up at home on Jan. 3 versus Northern State at 6 p.m.
