The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team (4-22, 2-18 NSIC) concludes the 2012-13 season on the road versus two ranked opponents. The Mustangs will battle No. 24 Concordia-St. Paul on Friday, Feb. 22, at 6 p.m., before taking on No. 21 Minnesota State on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 4 p.m.
SERIES HISTORY - CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL leads 27-16
Southwest Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul will meet for the 43rd time in a series that dates back to the 1974-75 season. The Golden Bears hold a 27-16 advantage over the Mustangs, including 10-8 at home. The Golden Bears are currently riding a two-game winning streak in the series including the 81-59 win earlier this season on Dec. 15, 2012. The Mustangs last defeated Concordia-St. Paul on Dec. 10, 2011, 60-55 at the R/A Facility, the last road victory over CU was during the 2001-02 season (76-57). CU has taken 23 of the last 25 contests dating back to the 2002-03 season. On the road versus CU, SMSU is 8-16 all-time.
SERIES HISTORY - MINNESOTA STATE leads 30-17
Minnesota State holds a 30-17 edge over Southwest Minnesota State in a series that dates back to the 1970-71 season. The Mavericks have built a 12-game winning streak over the Mustangs dating back to the 2004-05 season, including the 86-56 win earlier this season on Dec. 14. The Mustangs last defeated the Mavericks during the 2004-05 season, winning 74-61 at the R/A Facility. SMSU is 6-18 all-time versus Minnesota State on the road, with the last SMSU road victory coming during the 2003-04 season (73-62).
LAST WEEK RECAP
The Mustangs dropped its final two home Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games this past weekend to Wayne State on Friday and No. 23 Augustana on Saturday. In the 59-40 loss to the Wildcats, SMSU shot 32.7 percent (18 of 55) including 1 of 12 from 3-point range and were outrebounded 37-28. The Wildcats exploded out of the gates to score the first 11 points of the second half and never looked back as WSC outscored the Mustangs 35-18 in the second half.
In the 92-60 loss to No. 23 Augustana on Saturday, SMSU's
Alison Nagel set a new career-high by scoring 21 points. Nagel finished shooting 7 of 14 from the field, including 2 of 6 from behind the arc and 5 of 5 from the charity stripe. SMSU committed 23 turnovers in the loss. Augustana College connected on a R/A Facility record 16 3-point field goals to earn a 92-60 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball on Saturday night. The previous record was held by SMSU (15 3FG) set during the 2008-09.
The loss was SMSU's (4-22, 2-18 NSIC) fifth straight to Augustana (19-5, 15-5 NSIC) and fourth straight loss since defeating South Dakota Tech on Feb. 5.
