MARSHALL, Minn. - Alison Nagel had a chance with six seconds remaining to complete Southwest Minnesota State's comeback bid versus Minot State but a missed free throw followed by a lane violation dropped the Mustangs in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Saturday.
SMSU (4-20, 2-16 NSIC) was down as much as 20 points to MISU (11-11, 7-11 NSIC) but came all the way back only to lose 64-60 to the Beavers.
With 55 seconds remaining, SMSU's
Annessa Rosch came up with a steal and passed to teammate
Mikayla Saathoff, who went coast-to-coast and nailed a jumper to cut the lead to 62-60 with 42 seconds left. SMSU would force a missed Alisha Jones shot with 22 seconds left on the next MISU possession. The Mustangs came down with the rebound and
Alison Nagel was fouled with eight seconds left. Nagel, a 73.7 percent free throw shooter headed to the line but couldn't convert the first free throw. On the next free throw attempt,
Rebekah Rolling was called for a lane violation that turned the ball over to the Beavers. The Beavers sealed the game with two Sacarra Molina free throws with four seconds left.
The Mustangs, just like the night before, got off to a slow start – this time falling into a 15-3 deficit just 3:25 into the game. The Mustangs be down as much as 20 in the half but would slash the Beaver lead to six with 1:27 remaining in the half when
Alison Nagel connected on one of her two first half field goals. The Beavers would turn to Morgan Klose as she made good on a layup with 45 seconds left in the first half to put MISU up eight at the break, 34-26.
The Beavers shot 44.8 percent (26-58) from the floor, while the Mustangs shot 44.1 percent (26-59). The Beavers were 7 of 14 from behind the arc while the Mustangs only managed 3 of 15.
The Mustangs were led by
Alison Nagel's 15 points; it was the fifteenth time Nagel has finished a game in double-figures.
Annessa Rosch's 11 points and
Rebekah Rolling's 10 points rounded out the Mustangs double-digit scoring attack. Nagel pulled down a game-high nine rebounds as the junior finished one rebound shy of her first career double-double.
SMSU will conclude the home portion of the 2012-13 season next weekend, when the Mustangs host Wayne State on Friday, Feb. 15 and Augustana on Saturday, Feb. 16.
