Morgan Peterson's walk-off home run finishes SMSU's comeback over LIU Post; Mustangs cling to victory over Tiffin

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Morgan Peterson hit a walk-off two-run home run for Southwest Minnesota State in the bottom of the ninth inning to seal a 11-9 comeback victory over Long Island University Post at the Rebel Spring Games. In game two, SMSU hung on for a 4-3 win over Tiffin University (Ohio).

Peterson went 0 for 3 in her first three at-bats of the game but made the final two count - hitting two home runs, a three-run game-tying shot to left in the bottom of the seventh and a two-run walk-off black to left in the bottom of the ninth. Peterson finished 2 for 5 with two HRs and five RBIs. Amy Dreessen followed with a 3 for 5 and three RBI performance - finishing just a home run short of a cycle.

Long Island University Post struck first with a three-run inning to begin the game. Alexis Gonzalez followed a walk by Catherine Havens with a big blast over the right field wall. LIU would push another run across with a RBI double by Paige Swantek with two-outs.

SMSU would get on the board in the bottom of the third when Amy Dreessen connected on a one-out double to left center following singles by Chelsey Rodenkirch and Katelyn Kalkman to start the inning. With runners on second and third with one out, SMSU failed to cut the Pioneer lead as Morgan Peterson struck out and Jennifer Johnson grounded out to second to end the threat.

The Mustangs would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth with a two out pinch-hit two-RBI double to deep left field. Hanson advanced to third on a throwing error and tried to come home and was thrown at the plate to end the inning.

The fifth inning would haunt the Mustangs as an error by Shelbie Stoll would prolong the inning. LIU would cash in with a RBI walk, followed by a grand slam that put the Pioneers up 8-3.

Down five runs entering their last outs of the game, the Mustangs came all the way back when Morgan Peterson yanked a three-run home run over the left field fence following a RBI single by Kalkman that put the game at 8-4.

LIU would manufacture a run in the ninth, forcing the Mustangs to come again. Amy Dreessen tied the game on a RBI triple that scored Shelbie Stoll from second. Needing another big hit, Morgan Peterson stepped up and crushed her second home run of the game, this time a two-run walk-off shot to left center. The Mustangs finished with 13 hits, six were extra base hits. Rachel Groff started the game for SMSU, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing eight runs, four earned, six hits, three walks while striking out two. Rachel Hoeppner would come into pitch 4.1 innings of relief while picking up the win - allowing just one hit, one unearned run, a walk and struck out one.

SMSU's first two wins of the season have come in extra innings.

In SMSU's second win of the day versus Tiffin University (Ohio), the Mustangs would strike first in the top of the second when Emily Olson scored on a Alysse Luttmann single through the left side. The Mustangs would then cushion their lead in the third by adding two runs on a two-run two out double to deep left by Kailey Hanson.

Later in the game, Amy Dreessen would take advantage of a Dragon error by sending a double to left center that scored Shelbie Stoll. Dreessen would be stranded at second with Morgan Peterson and Hanson striking out.

Tiffin cut into the SMSU lead in the bottom of the sixth with two runs, with one coming off a Betty Gramm triple down the left field line.

SMSU reliever Katie Herron got out of the sixth inning jam allowing just an earned run after Tiffin pushed across an unearned run to make the score 4-3.

Hoeppner re-entered in the seventh with a one-run lead and closed the door to secure her third win of the season. After allowing a lead-off single to left, Hoeppner (3-5) got a strike out and two fly ball outs to left field. Hoeppner pitched six innings while allowing two runs, one earned runs, six hits and striking out four. Herron pitched a full inning in relief, allowing one

Three Mustangs finished with two hits - Alysse Luttmann (2 for 4), Morgan Peterson (2 for 4), and Bailie Sheahan (2 for 4). Kailey Hanson was 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

With the two wins today, SMSU improved to 3-5 overall and 3-3 at the Rebel Spring Games. The Mustangs will play two more games tomorrow when they battle Southern Indiana and Wayne State (Mich.) at 8 and 10 a.m. central time before taking their lone off-day of the week on Wednesday.
