MARSHALL, Minn. - The No. 9 Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team extended its winning streak to six straight matches on Saturday afternoon as the Mustangs defeated MSU Moorhead in straight sets. The Mustangs earned the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory with set scores of 25-21, 25-12, 25-23.
Three Mustangs led the way offensively as
Claire Sames (13-1-28),
Whitney Burmeister (10-6-41) and
Abbey Thissen (10-2-22) all notched double-digit kill totals. As a unit, the Mustangs combined to hit .206 in the three-set victory.
SMSU would overcome nine attack errors in set one to down MSUM 25-21. It was MSUM though that committed the error that ended the set when Maggie Gruber's ball handling error gave SMSU a 1-0 set advantage.
In set two, SMSU put together rallies of five points, four points and seven points as the Mustangs dominated their way to a 25-12 set victory. The seven-point rally came at the end of the set with SMSU leading 18-12.
The Mustangs found themselves in a 19-14 hole with the Dragons on a four-point rally. SMSU would take a timeout to stop the momentum and out of the timeout would work the score to 21-17. It was then when SMSU reeled off six straight points to take a 23-21 lead, capped off by a
Rachel Westby service ace. Just like set one and two, its was a Dragon error that gave SMSU the set victory.
Rachel Westby set a career-high in the three-set victory as she racked-up 31 digs.
SMSU (10-3, 5-0 NSIC) will hit the road next weekend when the Mustangs travel to North Dakota to take on the University of Mary and Minot State.
