SMSU drops another close road game

BOX SCORE

DULUTH, Minn. -
For the second straight game Southwest Minnesota State dropped a road game by four points or less. On this night it was the Mustangs falling by four to Minnesota Duluth, 64-60 at Romano Gymnasium in Duluth.

SMSU (2-12, 0-10 NSIC) trailed by 11 points at the half but pulled within two with 7:20 to go. The Mustangs couldn't ever take the lead or equalize the score the rest of the way, but SMSU never let the lead grow to more than five.

Rebekah Rolling put SMSU within striking range with 10 seconds remaining when her jumper made it 62-60. SMSU fouled on the ensuing possession hoping for a chance to keep it a one possession lead, but Danielle Flood came up big in the clutch – hitting both free throws to seal the victory.

SMSU held UMD to just 33.3 percent shooting (22 of 66) but only forced eight turnovers on one steal. SMSU finished shooting 41.1 percent (23 of 56), including 5 of 11 from behind the arc. Four Mustangs hit double-digit scoring totals in the loss, led by Ellen Degler's 13 points. Bree Holleman and Mikayla Saathoff both poured in 12 apiece, while Emilee Duske scored a season-high 10 points.

Saathoof, who finished just two boards away from a triple-double last night versus St. Cloud State, finished with 12 points, six assists and two rebounds.

UMD forced 16 SMSU turnovers on eight steals.
The loss was SMSU's 12th straight.

SMSU will another crack at Winona State and Upper Iowa at home this Friday and Saturday at the R/A Facility -- SMSU to the Warriors and Peacocks on the road earlier this season on Dec. 13-14.
