CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Southwest Minnesota State University wheelchair basketball team went 1-3 at the University of Illinois Tournament over the weekend. SMSU's lone win came over Illinois by a score of 48-37.
SMSU dropped close contests to the University of Arizona and a rematch with Illinois before being downed 74-34 by Wisconsin-Whitewater.
In SMSU's 48-37 win over Illinois,
Derek Klinkner and
David Nelson led the Mustangs in scoring as they netted 19 and 17, respectively. In SMSU's second match-up with the Illini later in the day, SMSU missed six free throws in the last 45 seconds to let an 11-point halftime lead slip away as UI's Tom Nagel nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to take a dramatic 45-44 victory over SMSU.
Klinkner poured in 20 points in SMSU's 51-48 loss to Arizona.
SMSU will return to the R/A Facility this weekend for four games versus the Sioux Falls Wheelers and Minnesota Rollin' Timberwolves.
