MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wheelchair basketball teams won a pair of close battles on Sunday to cap a perfect 4-0 weekend at the PE Gym.
In Sunday's opener, SMSU earned a 46-44 victory over the Timberwolves with
Derek Klinkner scoring 20 points, while
David Evjen chipped in with 10 points.
In the weekend's final game, SMSU rallied from an 11-point second half deficit to defeat the Sioux Falls Wheelers 52-49. Sioux Falls led 29-26 at halftime and scored the first eight points of the second half before SMSU started its rally. SMSU's
David Nelson stopped the Sioux Falls run with a jumper and the comeback was started as the Mustangs slowly cut into the lead before Klinkner connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game at 47. Sioux Falls answered with a field goal to take a 49-47 lead before Klinkner drilled another 3-pointer to push SMSU into the lead at 50-49 with 1:30 remaining. Less than a minute later Nelson sealed the SMSU victory with a 12-foot jumper to push the lead to 52-49.
SMSU defeated Sioux Falls (60-25) and the Timberwolves (56-29) on Saturday to open the weekend. In the win over Sioux Falls, Klinkner led SMSU with 18 points, while
Donte Hill added 14 points. In the victory over the Timberwolves, Nelson poured in a game-high 20 points with Klinkner adding 16 points.
SMSU (8-12) will return to the road next weekend, Jan. 31 and Feb.1, with three games in Wichita, Kan.
