>Box ScoreFAYETTE, Iowa — Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team kept its perfect 18-0 record against Upper Iowa after defeating the Peacocks in the Dorman Gymnasium by scores of 25-23, 20-25, 26-24, 25-20.
SMSU (15-5, 10-2 NSIC) hit .227 in the match while Upper Iowa (10-10, 5-7 NSIC) hit .141
Eisha Oden and
Abbey Thissen led the Mustangs in kills as the pair racked up 16 apiece in the match. Oden hit a team-high .324 while Thissen hit .294.
Kenzie Beekman and
Sarah Parker both contributed tonight as they recorded 13 and 11 kills, respectfully.
Whitney Burmeister tallied 30 digs in the match.
Megan Larson and
Emilee Gutzmer powered the offense as the pair dished out 60 assists. Larson recorded her second straight double-double and her fifth this season as she recorded 37 assists and 12 digs. Gutzmer dished out 23 assists in the win.
In the first set, Upper Iowa jumped out to a 6-2 lead and kept it until SMSU went ahead at 12-11. The two teams would trade points until a kill by
Sarah Parker and UIU attack erriors gave the Mustangs a 19-15 lead. The Peacocks would fight back and take the lead late in the set at 23-22. But three-straight kills by
Abbey Thissen and
Eisha Oden would give the Mustangs set one, 25-23.
In the second frame, Upper Iowa charged out to an 8-3 lead and kept it the rest of the set. The Mustangs tried to fight back going on a 6-3 run late to pull within four but could not catch up and dropped the set, 25-20.
The Mustangs came out in set three with a 5-0 lead to start and kept control until late in the set. The Peacocks tied the set 24-24 late but SMSU finished with a kill from
Sarah Parker and a block by
Kenzie Beekman and Parker to take the set, 26-24.
Upper Iowa took control in the beginning of set four as the Peacocks charged out to an 8-3 lead and held power until the Mustangs tied the set 11-11. The two teams exchanged points until SMSU went on a 7-2 run to take the set 25-20.
Southwest Minnesota State will travel to Winona State (14-4, 9-3 NSIC) tomorrow to play the Warriors in the McCown Gymnasium at 4 p.m.
