SMSU completes road trip with sweep over Winona State

WINONA, Minn. –
Megan Larson recorded her third-straight double-double and her sixth of the season as Southwest Minnesota State swept Winona State 25-23, 25-22, 25-16 at the McCown Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

Kenzie Beekman and Eisha Oden led the Mustangs with 11 kills each while hitting .267 and .435, respectfully. Sarah Parker recorded a team-high seven blocks in the match—three being solo.

Megan Larson dished out 21 assists and tallied 13 digs in the sweep to record her third-straight double-double and sixth of the season. Whitney Burmeister recorded 19 digs in the match.

SMSU took the early lead in the first set and held it until Winona State took it back late in the set, 23-22. But a service error and a pair of kills by Abbey Thissen gave the Mustangs the 25-23 set win.

In set two, Southwest Minnesota State charged out to a 4-0 lead but Winona State tied it up at, 10-10. WSU took a 16-12 lead in the set but SMSU charged back with a 5-1 run to tie it back up at 17-17. The Warriors scored the next three points but SMSU came back with five straight of its own to retake the lead, 22-20. A pair of kills by Eisha Oden and a service ace from Whitney Burmeister closed the set, 25-22.

Both teams traded points early in the third set until SMSU broke out a four-point streak to give them control. Southwest Minnesota State would hold control the rest of the set and finish, 25-16.

Southwest Minnesota State will return to the PE Gym to host No. 3 Concordia-St. Paul on Friday night at 7 p.m. before playing Minnesota State on Saturday afternoon. Fans are encourage to wear red to the Friday night game as the volleyball team is promoting a 'Red Out' in order to bring awareness to heart disease.
