>Box ScoreMARSHALL, Minn.- No. 5 Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team's nine-game win streak was snapped by No. 3 Concordia St. Paul Friday night in the PE Gym by scores of 23-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-17, 15-7.
SMSU (16-6, 11-3 NSIC) hit only .184 in the match while CU (19-3, 12-2 NSIC) hit .321. Concordia-St. Paul has won the last seven National Titles in Division II.
Sarah Parker led the Mustangs hitting .382 with 16 kills while Eisha Oden recorded a career-high 18 kills while hitting .314 in the contest and added six blocks. Kenzie Beekman recorded her eighth double-double as the freshman tallied 11 kills and 10 digs. Megan Larson powered the offense with 38 assists while Emilee Gutzmer dished out 20. Whitney Burmeister posted 22 digs on the night.
The two teams traded points in the first set as there was a match-high seven tie scores and three lead changes. Concordia took the lead after a 9-9 tie and held it until the Mustangs tied it up at 20-20 late in the game. SMSU went ahead after back-to-back kills by Kenzie Beekman and went on to closed out the set with a Sarah Parker kill, 25-23.
Concordia-St. Paul charged out to a 7-2 lead in the second game and held the lead the rest of the game as the Golden Bears hit .306 in the set and won, 25-17.
Set three was just the opposite as the previous, as the Mustangs earned a 9-3 lead to start the set. SMSU held control the rest of the way and closed it out 25-23 while hitting .333.
In set four, Mariya Sampson and Emma Lange powered the Golden Bears with a pair of kills to start the set. SMSU tried to jump-start its offense but could not erase the deficit and dropped the fourth game forcing a fifth set.
In the final set Concordia-St. Paul, again charged out to a 7-2 lead and kept the power on its side. The Mustangs failed to find the floor as they tried five times without a kill. CU closed out the set, 15-7.
Southwest Minnesota State will return to the PE Gym tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. to play Minnesota State.
