MARSHALL, Minn. – Terry Culhane earned his 100th home win in the PE Gym as No. 9 Southwest Minnesota State (11-5, 5-2 NSIC) recorded its fourth consecutive sweep Saturday afternoon as they defeated University of Mary (3-14, 0-8 NSIC) by scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-12.
Kenzie Beekman led the offense again with 13 kills on 32 swings to record a .312 in the match. Claire Sames and Sarah Parker added eight and six kills, respectfully. The Mustangs hit .283 in the match and racked up just four blocks.
Megan Larson and Emilee Gutzmer split the assists with 16 each. Whitney Burmeister tallied 15 digs in match.
In set one, Southwest Minnesota State charged out to a 10-2 lead and kept control the rest of the match. The Mustangs took set one, 25-16.
Set two, University of Mary kept with Southwest Minnesota State as there were a match-high five tie scores and three lead changes. The two were tied at 7-7 before kills from Claire Sames and Kenize Beekman propelled the Mustangs to take the set, 25-17.
In the final set, SMSU rushed out to a 10-3 lead and kept control the rest of the match. Southwest Minnesota State closed the set out 25-12 and a .341 hitting percentage.
Southwest Minnesota State will begin a five game road trip as it travels to Moorhead, Minn., to play MSU Moorhead Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
