Late overtime goal gives SMSU dramatic win over Minnesota Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. —
Autumn Hayes scored in the last 90 seconds of overtime to defeat Minnesota Duluth, 2-1 at James S. Malosky Stadium for the first time in program history and just the second time overall.
 
Southwest Minnesota State (6-4, 5-2 NSIC) recorded 13 shots in the match with seven on goal while Minnesota Duluth (4-6, 4-3 NSIC) fired 25 shots and 13 on goal.
 
Miranda Cadena scored first for the Mustangs in the 34th minute for her 9th goal of the year and is now tied with Joelle Dean (2004-07) for the most career goals at Southwest Minnesota State with 28. SMSU led going into the break, 1-0.
 
In the second half, UMD Maureen Stormont scored her 7th goal of the season to tie the match up in the 59th minute.
 
In overtime, Autumn Hayes scored with less than 90 seconds to go to give the Mustangs a dramatic 2-1 win over the Bulldogs. Kendahl Fisher assisted on the game-winning goal and also assisted on Cadena's goal. Fisher is now only one assist behind Nadia AbuAyed (2001-04) for the most assists in a career. Hayes now has six game-winning goals in her career at SMSU.
 
Brienna Dehkes grabbed 12 saves in the win and moved to 5-4 on the season.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will return to the Schwan Regional Event Center for a pair of games hosting Bemidji State on Oct. 11 and Minnesota Crookston on Oct. 12. Both games are set to start at 1 p.m.
