MARSHALL, Minn. – St. Olaf forced Southwest Minnesota State into 25 turnovers and used a team-high 28 points from Justin Pahl to earn a 91-88 double overtime victory in exhibition men's basketball on Monday night.
St. Olaf held a 28-6 scoring advantage in points off of turnovers and finished the game making 26 of 37 free throws, while committing just six turnovers.
SMSU's
MJ Delmore hit a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime at 77.
Joey Bartlett led SMSU with 28 points on 11 of 15 shooting with five 3-pointers.
SMSU led for much of the first half, including building its largest lead at 20-13 with nine minutes and 24 seconds remaining following a layup by
Carter Kirk.
St. Olaf then mounted its big comeback, scoring the next 13 points to build a 26-20 lead with 4:54 remaining. SMSU's
Joey Bartlett stopped the run with a layup, but the Oles rallied with 10 straight points to extend the lead to 36-22, before eventually taking a 40-28 halftime lead.
The Oles led for much of the second half until Bartlett drilled a 3-pointer with five minutes remaining to give SMSU a 64-63 lead.
St. Olaf led by six points with under a minute remaining in regulation only to see SMSU rally to tie the game and send to overtime.
SMSU had a chance to win the game in the final seconds of the first overtime, but Kirk missed a field goal with two seconds remaining.
Southwest Minnesota State opens the regular season this Friday night taking on East Central University (Okla.) in Bartlesville, Okla., with tip-off slated for 7:30 p.m.
