MARSHALL, Minn.— Miranda Cadena scored a pair of goals to lead the Mustangs to a 2-1 victory over No. 23 Augustana Sunday afternoon at the Schwan Regional Event Center. The win marks the first against Augustana in over a decade for the Mustangs.
It took only 23 second for Cadena to score the first goal of the match from an assist by
Kylie Redmond. The junior broke through the Augie defense to find the back of the net for her first goal of the game and her 12th of the season.
SMSU (10-7-1, 95-1 NSIC) fired three shots in the first half while Augustana (14-4, 12-3 NSIC) recorded six. The Mustangs led, 1-0 at intermission.
After the break, Cadena found the back of the net again for her second goal of the game and her 13 of the season in the 55th minute to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
Augustana fired back in the 79th minute as Stephanie Stevens scored to cut the deficit to one.
Southwest Minnesota State defense kept Augustana from scoring again and went on to win, 2-1.
SMSU tallied nine shots in the match—seven on goal—while Augie fired 10 shots including nine on goal.
Brienna Dehkes was credited with the win and imporoved her record to 8-7. Dehkes recorded six saves in the first half.
Denae Brooks came into goal for the second half and tallied a pair of saves.
