KEARNEY, Neb. – Laramey Lewis scored 33 points with six 3-pointers to lead Nebraska-Kearney to a 105-66 non-conference victory over Southwest Minnesota State in women's basketball on Friday night.
Lewis made six of eight 3-point attempts in the game, while as a team the Lopers connected on 12 of 22 from 3-point range. UNK finished night shooting 56 percent (41 of 73) from the field and held a 44-29 rebound advantage. Amarah Williams also had a big game for UNK (1-3) with 20 points and 15 rebounds.
SMSU (0-3) was led by
Annessa Rosch, who poured in 16 points on 7 of 13 shooting with three assists.
Lauren Hedlund came off the bench to score 15 points, while
Amaun Frazier chipped in with 13 points with a team-leading four assists.
Hope Bonlander grabbed a team-high six rebounds and also added nine points.
UNK jumped to a 15-4 lead in the opening eight minutes and never looked back, limiting SMSU to just 32 percent shooting in the first half, in building a 44-23 halftime advantage.
The Mustangs would shot 47 percent in the second half, but the Lopers were red-hot, shooting 61 percent and scoring 61 points.
The loss spoiled the return of SMSU head coach
Allison Kruger, who was making her first appearance at her alma mater as a head coach. Kruger was a four-year letterwinner and two-time All-American at UNK from 1999-2004.
SMSU returns home next Tuesday to open conference play versus the University of Sioux Falls with tip-off slated for 6 p.m.
