MARSHALL, Minn. - Michigan Tech made 10 3-pointers and limited Southwest Minnesota State to a season-low 43 percent shooting in earning a 74-59 victory on Friday night at the R/A Facility.

MTU (2-0) was led by Jordan Chartier, who scored a game-high 17 points on 6 of 9 shooting with five 3-pointers, while also dishing out four assists and grabbing four rebounds. The Huskies finished the game shooting 46 percent (26 of 56) from the field and committed just seven turnovers.

SMSU (3-2), which entered the game averaging 89 points per game and 12.5 3-pointers per game, was held to just five 3-pointers and committed 14 turnovers, which led to 24 MTU points.

Mitch Weg led the Mustangs with 11 points, while
Cole Martin added 10 points.

SMSU opened the game with a 3-pointer by Martin, but MTU quickly took its first lead of the game less than two minutes into the game and never trailed for the remainder of the game.

The Huskies built a 27-17 lead with 10:48 left in the half, before SMSU countered with back-to-back field goals by Martin and
Travis Meinders to trim the deficit to 27-21 at the 8:23 mark.

MTU countered with another run – this time reeling off seven straight points – to make the score 34-21 with 6:13 remaining.

MJ Demore and
Joey Bartlett answered with field goals to cut the MTU lead to 34-27, but the Huskies closed the half on a 10-0 run in the final three minutes to build a 44-27 halftime lead.

MTU forced SMSU into 11 first half turnovers and held a 19-0 advantage in points off of turnovers in the half. MTU shot 52 percent in the opening half with seven 3-pointers, while SMSU was limited to 39 percent shooting, marking the first time in five games SMSU failed to shoot 50 percent in a half.

The Huskies didn't let up to start the second half and pushed the lead to 60-39 with 12:45 remaining following a 3-pointer by Chartier and maintained a 20-plus point lead until the game's final two minutes.

Southwest Minnesota State continues non-conference home action tomorrow taking on Northern Michigan at 6 p.m. NMU (2-3) dropped a 70-63 decision to Wayne State earlier on Friday night at the R/A Facility.
