BISMARCK, N.D. — Southwest Minnesota State came up short in overtime, 76-70, versus the University of Mary on Friday night in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play despite leading at half.
Four Mustangs scored in double figures, led by
Lauren Hedlund with 16 points while
Hope Bonlander recorded 11.
Ellen Degler and
Amaun Frazier both ended with 10.
Annessa Rosch powered the offense as she dished out four assists while Degler snagged five steals.
U-Mary (4-6, 2-2 NSIC) led the majority of the first half but the Mustang offense found its stride with just 4:00 minutes to go in the first as they went on a 7-0 run to tied the game up at 30-30. SMSU capped off the half on an 8-2 run to lead 38-32 at halftime for the first time this season.
SMSU (0-8, 0-4 NSIC) controlled the boards in the first half as the Mustangs held a 22-15 advantage. The Mustangs shot 43.8 percent from the floor and held the Marauders to 41.9 percent.
Lauren Hedlund led the Mustangs with 12 points coming off the bench with half coming from the free-throw line.
After the break, SMSU kept its stride early as they tagged on another eight points going into an U-Mary timeout still leading, 46-36 for its biggest lead of the game. The Marauders came out of a timeout out and tied the game back up at 13:02 with a three-pointer by Gabby Wilkinson. Both teams fought for the lead as they traded points down the stretch. The Marauders took the lead, 68-66 with 1:27 left on the clock but
Whitney Miller found the basket on the returning series to keep the game tied with 54.8 seconds left. The Marauders had an opportunity to win the game as they took possession of the ball with 4.6 left but failed to score.
In overtime,
Amaun Frazier scored with 3:37 left to give the Mustangs a 70-68 led. Brittney Dietz answered with a three-pointer for her 28th point of the night to give the Marauders a 71-70 advantage. SMSU had an opportunity to tie the game late but came up empty, losing 76-70.
SMSU handled the boards as they out rebounded the Marauders 47-33. The Mustangs finished the game shooting 38.6 percent from the floor and 18.2 percent from behind the arc. U-Mary shot 46 percent to end the game while hitting 6-of-16 from three-point for 37.5 percent.
Southwest Minnesota State will continue on its road trip as it plays Minot State tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
