MINOT, N.D. — Mitch Weg scored a career-high 22 points to help lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 91-81 victory over Minot State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball Saturday night in the Minot State Dome.
SMSU (8-3, 4-1 NSIC) was led by Weg, who set a career-high in free throws as he went a perfect 12-of-12 from the stripe.
MJ Delmore contributed 17 points while
Cole Martin added 12.
The Mustangs finished the game shooting 59 percent from the floor and 41 percent from behind the arc. SMSU was also efficient from the free throw line as they made 26-of-29.
Minot State (6-4, 2-3 NSIC) finished shooting 45 percent from the floor while only making 5-of-20 from three.
MISU held a 35-27 advantage on rebounds and a 7-8 in turnovers. SMSU scored 42 points from the bench.
Both teams traded baskets to start the game until
Joey Bartlett dropped in a three with 9:49 left in the half to jumpstart the Mustang offense. SMSU went on to lead by as many as eight in the half despite leading by just a point at 3:32.
Drew Osmundson put in a basket at the buzzer to give the Mustangs a 38-32 advantage going into halftime.
Southwest Minnesota State kept control of the game after halftime and built its largest lead of the game after an 'and-one' from Weg at 9:50 to make the score, 61-51. The Beavers started to cut into the Mustangs lead that keyed from a Thomas Korf three. MISU would cut the lead down to three before a three-pointer from Delmore at 5:41 gave the Mustangs some breathing room. SMSU's offense would continue to produce as it shot 80 percent from the floor and went on to close the road trip with a 91-81 win.
Southwest Minnesota State will travel to the University of Sioux Falls next weekend to take on the Cougars on Dec. 20.
