MINOT, N.D. – Minot State's Carly Boag scored a school single-game record 39 points and grabbed 18 rebounds and in the process became the program's all-time leading scorer in leading the Beavers to a 76-66 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in NSIC women's basketball on Saturday night.
Boag has now scored 1,718 points in her career and is also the program's all-time leader in rebounds, blocked shots and field goal percentage. Boag finished the game making 15 of 22 field goals and was 9 of 11 from the free throw line.
MISU (17-7, 13-7 NSIC) shot 42 percent (30 of 72) from the field and held a 45-28 rebound advantage, including pulling down 21 offensive rebounds.
SMSU (4-20, 2-18 NSIC) was led by
Alison Nagel, who poured in 21 points on 7 of 14 shooting with eight rebounds, while
Bree Holleman added a season-high 20 points on 7 of 9 shooting, including four 3-pointers.
Rebekah Rolling also scored double figures for SMSU with 10 points. It was the sixth 20-point game of the season for Nagel.
The Mustangs ended the game shooting 45 percent (21 of 47) from the field and made 18 of 22 free throws, but it wasn't enough to overcome 16 turnovers and MISU's rebound advantage.
MISU jumped out to an early 10-2 lead in the first three and a half minutes and eventually built a 24-14 lead with eight minutes remaining in the half.
SMSU then tightened up defense and held MISU scoreless for the next seven minutes as the Mustangs put together an 11-0 run to take their first lead of the game. Nagel started the run with a three-point play and was followed by four free throws by
Jessie Watts. Holleman closed spurt with a 3-pointer and free throw to give SMSU a 25-24 lead with 2:07 left in the half.
MISU closed the half with a pair of field goals to take a 28-25 halftime lead.
The Beavers pushed the lead to six points on several occasions early in the second half, before SMSU rallied to within 42-41 with 13 minutes remaining following a 3-pointer by Watts. MISU came right back with a 9-0 run to push the advantage to 51-41 with less than 10 minutes left in the game.
Rolling stopped the run with a three-point play and was followed moments later by two free throws by
Kendra Snaza to make the score 51-46. But once again MISU stopped SMSU's comeback attempt with seven straight points to extend the lead to 58-46 with seven minutes left and the lead never dipped below 10 points for the remainder of the game.
Southwest Minnesota State concludes the regular season next weekend with two home games at the R/A Facility. SMSU will take on Concordia-St. Paul on Friday starting at 6 p.m., before facing Minnesota State on Saturday at 5 p.m.
