MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wheelchair basketball, following a two-week break, return to action this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the 2014 National Wheelchair Basketball Association Intercollegiate National Championships in Arlington, Texas.
SMSU enters the tournament as the No. 6 seed in the seven-team tournament with a 14-15 overall record. The Mustangs will face the No. 3 seed University of Alabama on Thursday with tip-off set for 3 p.m. at the Mavericks Activities Center on the campus of UT-Arlington. Alabama defeated SMSU 53-37 in the only meeting between the teams this season. If SMSU wins, they'll play the winner of UW-Whitewater or Edinboro University on Friday at 1 p.m. If SMSU loses its opening game, they play on Friday at 11 a.m.
The NWBA National Championships will have seven teams competing in the tournament, including the University of Alabama, Edinboro University, the University of Illinois, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, the University of Missouri, the University of Texas at Arlington and Southwest Minnesota State University.
The NWBA has held a national tournament since 1977 with SMSU winning national titles in 1981, 1983 and 1986. The University of Alabama won last year's championship.
