In the opener, John Hayes tossed a five-hit shutout, while in game two, CU rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the seventh inning to score the game's final seven runs.
Hayes was dominating for the Golden Bears (21-11, 13-9 NSIC) in the opener tossing his first career shutout with a career-high nine strikeouts and allowing just five hits. Hayes – who lost to SMSU in a non-conference game earlier this season in Arizona, allowing nine runs on 10 hits – entered the game registering just 10 strikeouts all season.

CU started game one in a big way with three straight hits and went on to score four runs on five hits with a pair of SMSU errors to take a 4-0 advantage off of SMSU starter
Jimmy Callahan.
CU then added to the lead in the third with a pair of runs on three hits – all coming with two outs – to make the score 6-0.
Callahan (5-1) lasted just three innings – his shortest outing of the season – allowing six runs on 11 hits to suffer his first loss of the season. He had pitched into the sixth inning in all six of his previous starts this season.
Patrick Rients led the Mustangs in game one with a pair of hits.
In game two, SMSU (17-20, 8-13 NSIC) started the scoring in the third on a leadoff single by
Ryan Engels and a bunt single by
Ben Korger. Following a sac bunt by
Jordon Kontz, Rients lofted a sac fly to center to score Engels and put SMSU in the lead 1-0.
Engels started another rally in the fifth as he worked a one-out walk and came around to score two batters later on a two-out RBI double by Kontz to give SMSU a 2-0 advantage.
Travis McGlauflin carried a shutout into the seventh, before CU finally broke through to gain the lead with a two-out rally. With a runner at first and two outs, McGlauflin was one pitch away from getting out of the inning, but a walk on a 3-2 pitch, an RBI single and another walk made the score 2-1 with the bases loaded.
Joe Axelson entered the game in relief and allowed a two-run single to push the Golden Bears into the lead at 3-2.
The Golden Bears added another run in the eighth on an RBI sac bunt, then put the game away scoring three more runs with two outs in the ninth to make the score 7-2.
