MANKATO, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team was defeated by Minnesota State, 29-9, Thursday night in SMSU's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener.
 
MSU (3-0, 3-0 NSIC) and SMSU (3-3, 0-1 NSIC) both traded wins in the first four duals. MSU scored first as Da'Wayne Robertson defeated Anthony Luft at 125 pounds by major decision, 13-5 to give the Mavricks an early 4-0 lead.
 
Jordan Biehn put the Mustangs on the board in the following dual at 133 pounds by an 8-2 decision.
 
Trent Butcher loss by a major decision at 141 pounds before John Weeding gave the Mustangs a win at 149 by a close 6-5 decision to put the score 8-6 in favor of MSU after the first four duals
 
MSU took control as it earned wins in the next five duals by decisions and by two falls. Patrick Kelley (157), Jacob Begin (165) and Brody Goens (165) all suffered a loss by decision. Begin's win streak end at nine when MSU's No. 4 Cody Quinn defeated him by a 7-2 decision.
 
Ashton Bartlett (184) and Tristan Ezell (197) both were defeated by fall at 5:32 and 1:37, respectfully. The Mavricks led, 29-6 going into the final dual.
 
Cole Wilson improved his winning streak to five wins as the No. 5 ranked heavyweight in the nation won by a 3-1 decision over Malcolm Allen to earn the last points for SMSU.

Southwest Minnesota State will travel to Kearney, Neb., on Saturday for the Midwest Duals where they will face Colorado State-Pueblo, Central Missouri, Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Mesa.
