THIS WEEKEND - The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team (1-11, 1-7 NSIC) will continue Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on the road this weekend as it plays Upper Iowa (3-9, 1-7 NSIC) on Friday at 6 p.m. in the Dorman Gym before playing Winona State (9-3, 5-3 NSIC) on Saturday with a 4 p.m. tip off from the McCown Gymnasium.
RADIO - The games this weekend will be broadcast on 105.1 FM KARL with Ryan Rohlik handling play-by-play and Anthony Rohlik serving as analyst.
ABOUT UPPER IOWA - The Peacocks, picked to finish seventh in the NSIC South and 14th overall, will enter the weekend with a 3-9 record, including 1-7 in the NSIC. UIU is on a five-game losing skid with its last win coming at SMSU on Dec. 6. Lauren Buck leads the Peacock offense with 15.1 ppg while shooting 43 percent from behind the arc. Buck also leads the team with 10.5 rpg this season and Olivia Winkler leads the team shooting 61 percent from the field. Carol Russell is in her fifth season as head coach at Upper Iowa.
UPPER IOWA SERIES HISTORY - Southwest Minnesota State and Upper Iowa will meet for the 18th time on Friday night with UIU holding a 9-8 advantage in a series that started back in 2004. LAST TIME VS UPPER IOWA - Upper Iowa held off a late second-half comeback attempt by SMSU to earn an 82-75 victory in NSIC women's basketball Dec. 6, 2014 in the R/A Facility. Lauren Buck led the Peacocks with 20 points, 16 rebounds, two blocked shots, two steals and two assists.
Lauren Hedlund led SMSU with a game-high 21 points, while
Annessa Rosch added 18 and
Emilee Duske scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.
ABOUT WINONA STATE - The Warriors, picked to finished sixth in the NSIC South and 12th overall, will enter the weekend with a 9-3 overall record and 5-3 in the NSIC. WSU has lost the last two conference games with it's last win coming from Upper Iowa before the holiday break. Winona State will host Sioux Falls on Friday night before playing SMSU on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors are led by Tara Roelofs and Kayla Timmerman who are averaging 13 and 10 ppg, respectfully while Timmerman also leads the team in blocks with 20, rebounds with six rpg and is shooting 53 percent from the floor. Scott Ballard is in his 11th season as head coach at Winona State.
WINONA STATE SERIES HISTORY - Southwest Minnesota State and Winona State will meet for the 75th time on Saturday with SMSU holding a 44-30 advantage in a series that started back in 1973. The Warriors lead 21-16 all-time in games played in Winona, Minn. SMSU's last win came a season ago in the R/A Facility with a 65-61 victory. SMSU head coach
