FAYETTE, Iowa — Upper Iowa's Carson Parker scored a 3-pointer with two seconds left in overtime to give Upper Iowa a dramatic 105-103 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball Friday night.
Upper Iowa's Grant Lang scored with seven seconds left in regulation to force the game into overtime.
SMSU (9-6, 5-4 NSIC) finished shooting 50 percent from the floor and cashed on 10 for 24 from behind the arc for a 41 percent mark.
Cole Martin finished leading the Mustangs as the senior set a new career-high with 23 points and 3-pointers made with four, including grabbing five rebounds.
Joey Bartlett tallied 20 points and nine boards while
MJ Delmore and
Carter Kirk contributed 14 and 13 points, respectfully. Kirk also pulled down nine rebounds.
Turner Moen also made his mark as he posted eight boards and contributed 11 points.
UIU (8-7, 5-4 NSIC) finished shooting 56 percent from the floor and was led by Parker with 14 points. Bo Pagel recorded 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Both teams started the game with their offenses in sync. UIU would take the lead and lead the whole first half. The Peacocks would lead by as many as 12 with 9:55 left but a dunk by
Cole Martin keyed the Mustang offense to go on a 13-2 run.
SMSU would pull with in a point with 7:07 left in the half. The Mustangs would tie the game up for the first time with just 21 seconds left in the half but a jumper by Jordan Hay would give the Peacocks a two-point advantage going into halftime, 47-45.
The Mustangs would start off the second half with an 8-2 run to give SMSU its first lead and go on to its largest lead of the game with 17:42 at 55-49. UIU would cut the Mustang lead and tie the game at 58-58 with 14:53 left.
Both teams would fight to take the lead and neither team would lead more than three points for the rest of the game.
UIU took a two-point lead with 4:07 left, for the first time since 11:36 left in the game, after Grant Lang hit a deep three to put the Peacocks up, 83-81.
SMSU led, 90-89 with less than 30 seconds to play.
Travis Meinders would score a layup with just 23 seconds to go but on the following drive, Carson Parker would score a jumper to pull the Peacocks within one.
MJ Delmore would get fouled with 13 seconds left and would make both free throws.
Lang would cash in a 3-pointer with seven seconds left to force the game into overtime.
There were 10 ties and 12 lead changes in the second half.
Overtime would look much of the same as both teams traded baskets and fought to take and hold the lead. SMSU led by one with 25.2 seconds left coming out of a UIU timeout.
Turner Moen would get fouled with 19.2 seconds left but missed both free throws. UIU's Parker would hit a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left to give the Peacocks a 105-103 victory.
Southwest Minnesota State men's basketball will continue its road trip, as it will play Winona State tomorrow at 6 p.m.
