SMSU suffers road loss to UIU

FAYETTE, IOWA —
Lauren Buck recorded her second double-double of the season as Upper Iowa defeated Southwest Minnesota State, 74-63 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Friday night in the Dorman Gymnasium.
 
SMSU (1-12, 1-8 NSIC) finished shooting 34 percent from the floor, led by Annessa Rosch with 18 points. Ellen Degler contributed 15 points for her fourth straight game with double figures in scoring and led the Mustangs with seven rebounds. Hope Bonlander recorded 13 points and led the team shooting 55 percent (5 for 9).
 
UIU (4-9, 2-7 NSIC) finished shooting 44 percent from the floor, led by Lindsay Carroll with 21 points and a team-high seven assists. Olivia Winkler contributed 16 points while Lauren Buck scored 13 points and grabbed 15 boards in the win.
 
SMSU started the game out with a 7-4 lead keyed from a Whitney Miller 3-pointer with 14:48 left in the first half.
 
The Peacocks would fight back and tie it up at 7-7 with 12:38 left to play and both teams would trade points through the half but a pair of free-throws and a three by Rosch would give the Mustangs their biggest led of the game at 28-23 with 1:43 left in the half.
 
The Peacocks would not give up as they went go on a 9-0 run to finish the first half leading, 32-28.
 
After the break, UIU would take control of the game as it went on to lead by 13 with 13:34 left to play.
 
SMSU would cut the lead down to nine with 12:18 left to play but the Peacocks wouldn't let the Mustangs get close as they pushed the lead back to 13. UIU would go on to extend its lead to the largest of the game at 59-44 with 8:11 remaining.
 
UIU would continue to control the game an hold off Southwest Minnesota State to earn its second NSIC win of the season, 74-63.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will continue its road trip as it travels to Winona State tomorrow for a 4 p.m. tip off.
