MARSHALL, Minn. - For the first time since 2012, the No. 5 Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team defeated No. 1 Minnesota Duluth at home in a thrilling 3-2 match on Friday night. The Mustangs won by scores of 25-14, 25-22, 19-25, 22-25, 15-12. It was also the first time the Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team defeated a No. 1 ranked NSIC team dating back to 2012 in the NSIC Championship match verse Concordia-St. Paul.
SMSU (13-3, 6-2 NSIC) had four players in double-digits in the kills category, as
Abbey Thissen led the way hammering 18 kills while hitting .273. NSIC Defensive Player of the Week,
Taylor Reiss, recorded her first career double-double tonight as the freshman grounded 14 kills while also tallying 10 digs.
Sarah Parker contributed 14 while hitting .333 and
Eisha Oden added 11 kills.
Megan Larson was just shy of her eighth double-double of the season as the sophomore dished out 54 assists and added eight digs.
The Mustang defense once again controlled the net, as they held the Bulldogs to a .196 hitting percentage while also racking up eight team blocks. Four Mustangs grabbed double-digit digs as
Whitney Burmeister led the way with 23.
Kaylee Burmeister tallied 13 while
Kenzie Beekman and Reiss added 10. Parker put up five blocks in the win and Oden added three.
Southwest Minnesota State will close out the weekend hosting St. Cloud State tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m., in the PE Gym.
