Fisher scores game-winning goal to propel SMSU over WSC

MARSHALL, Minn. -
The Southwest Minnesota State women's soccer team finished the regular season on a high note after defeating Wayne State, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Schwan Regional Event Center.

SMSU celebrated it's six seniors before the game: Kristy Leopold, Kara Whiting, Kendahl Fisher, Kylie Redmond, Megan Kilroy and Miranda Cadena.

SMSU finished the regular season 8-8-2 overall and 8-6-1 in the conference, while WSC concluded the season 4-11-3 overall and 3-6-3 NSIC.

Kendahl Fisher scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute to break the scoreless drought and gave the Mustangs the lead.

The Mustang defense would hold on, as it did not let the Wildcats get a shot off the rest of the game. SMSU held WSC to just five shots with two being on goal in the match. Kristy Leopold started in goal and grabbed the only two saves in the game before Brienna Dehkes came in relief in the second half. Dehkes picked up the win and moves to 2-5-1 on the season.

Fisher led the offense with four shots in the game with two being on goal. Miranda Cadena recorded the other shot on goal, while Kylie Redmond, Emily Huddleston and Megan Kilroy each recorded a shot.

SMSU held a 8-5 advange in shots, with WSC taking a 3-1 advange in corner kicks.

Southwest Minnesota State will await its opponent and seed for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament with the first round being played at the host site on Wednesday. Follow SMSU on social media or smsumustangs.com for updates.
