Mustangs fall in double-overtime to the Marauders

MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team suffered an 80-77 double-overtime loss to the University of Mary in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Friday night.

SMSU (1-8, 0-4 NSIC) shot 35.3 percent on 24-68 from the floor, while U-Mary (7-4, 1-2 NSIC) hit 28 of 80 attempts for a 35 percentage. The overtime loss was the 10th-straight for the Mustangs and the second straight against the Marauders.

Four Mustangs scored double-digit points, as Sarah Buysse lead as she netted a career-high 19 points on 5 of 11 attempts from the floor and 7 of 7 from the free-throw line. Hope Bonlander recorded her fifth double-digit point game of the season, as the senior scored 17 points on 5 of 12 shooting and 7 of 10 from the charity stripe. Annessa Rosch added 14 points, while Lauren Hedlund tallied 12.

SMSU's defense was paced by Taylor Silva who recorded seven rebounds and Hedlund grabbed six.

SMSU led to start the game, but U-Mary jumped out a six-point lead following a 3-pointer with 6:35 left in the first quarter and held the lead into the second frame. The Mustangs cut the deficit down to one in the second quarter after Bonlander made a layup at 8:49. The Marauders did not give up the lead, despite SMSU tying the game twice down the stretch and led 38-36 at the half.

The Mustangs shot 45.2 percent in the first 20 minutes on 14 of 31 shooting and held the Marauders to a 36.8 percentage on 14 of 38 attempts. Hope Bonlander paced the offense with 10 points, while Annessa Rosch added nine. SMSU controlled the paints holding a 10-9 rebound advantage.

After the break, SMSU gained momentum as it went on an 11-3 run to start the third quarter and to lead 48-41 with 3:54 left. The Mustangs went on to build a 10-point lead-its largest of the game-after a pair of free throws by Rosch at the 3:54 mark.

The Mustangs led 60-53 with 7:55 left in the game after a Buysse 3-pointer. U-Mary would go on a 7-2 run to cut the Mustangs lead down to just two with 1:32 left. SMSU would lead by three with 38 seconds left, but a Marauder 3-pointer with 18 seconds left would push the game into overtime.

U-Mary would lead to start the first overtime, but SMSU would grab the lead with 2:44 left. The Marauders scored a pair of free throws with 26 seconds left to tie the game up again. The Mustang defense would hold despite a last second three by U-Mary to force a double overtime for the first time since 2011.

In the second overtime, both teams exchanged baskets but a 3-pointer by U-Mary with 2:34 left in the game gave it momentum as they led the rest of the game to defeat SMSU, 80-77.

Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball will resume action tomorrow night against Minot State at 5 p.m.
