Hedlund records double-double in win over Wildcats

Southwest Minnesota State sophomore Lauren Hedlund scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to recorded her second double-double of her career, as the Mustangs defeated Culver-Stockton 78-66 in a non-conference matchup Friday night.

SMSU (3-8) finished shooting 46.4 percent in the game netting 32 of 69 attempts. C-SC (10-3) scored on 29 of 67 shots to finish shooting 43.3 percent.

Hope Bonlander led all scorers with 22 points on 10 of 13 shooting from the floor and 2 of 3 from the free-throw line. Hedlund added 17 points on 7 of 13 shooting and 3 of 4 from the charity stripe.

The SMSU defense controlled the paint as it held a 47-30 rebound advantage led by Hedlund with 11 boards, while Taylor Holicky tied her career-high with nine. The Mustangs also added 13 points of second chances.

C-SC grabbed an early lead in the first quarter, but SMSU tied it 11-all with 2:59 left in the first quarter. The Mustangs didn't look back, as it built an 11-point lead in the second quarter after a Bonlander layup gave them a 31-20 advantage with 4:34 left in the half.

SMSU led 37-28 at the break after connecting on 17 of 39 shooting for a 43.6 percent mark. C-SC finished the half with a 41.4 percentage from the field on 12 of 29 attempts.

Bonlander paced the Mustangs at the half-way mark with 14 points on 7 of 10 shooting, while Hedlund added 9 points and controlled the boards with eight rebounds.

SMSU started the second half in full control as it went on a 10-6 run over the first five minutes before Sariah Cheadle and Sarah Buysse combined to score three-straight 3-pointers to push the Mustang lead to 20 with 3:48 in the quarter. SMSU went on to lead by 23-its largest of the game-at the end of the third quarter, 63-40.

The Mustangs controlled the rest of the game as they went on to win 78-66.

Southwest Minnesota State will close the 2015 year tomorrow night hosting Sioux Falls with the tip starting a 4 p.m.
