SMSU rallies for last-second victory over USF

MARSHALL, Minn. –
Joey Bartlett scored on a lay-up with 3.7 seconds remaining to give Southwest Minnesota State a 62-60 victory over the University of Sioux Falls in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball on Saturday night.
 
It was the second straight final-second victory for SMSU. Last Saturday night, Ryan Bruggeman scored a lay-up with 4.5 seconds remaining to earn an 86-84 win.
 
Mitch Weg and Carter Kirk each scored 10 points to lead SMSU (7-4, 3-3 NSIC), while Weg grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
 
Jordan Stotts led USF (8-4, 3-3 NSIC) with 12 points.
 
SMSU closed the game shooting 46 percent (24 of 52) from the field, including 4 of 10 from 3-point range. SMSU shot 52 percent in the second half.
 
USF finished shooting 44 percent (24 of 54), while making 6 of 17 from 3-point range.
 
The Mustangs held a 34-26 rebound advantage, while both teams committed 13 turnovers.
 
USF scored the game's first six points and eventually built an 18-4 lead in the opening six and a half minutes.
 
SMSU answered with the next 12 points—including a pair of 3-pointers by Shaun Condon and Michael Lee—to cut the deficit to 18-16 with nine minutes and 20 seconds left in the first half.


 
USF pushed the lead to 22-16 at the 8:16 mark and maintained the lead for the remainder of the half. SMSU would later cut the deficit to two points on five different occasions, including in the final minute on a field goal by Lee to make the score 32-30 in favor of USF at halftime.
 
USF shot 48 percent in the first half with three 3-pointers, while SMSU shot 41 percent in the opening half and connected on a pair of 3-pointers.
 
The Cougars held a pair of seven-point leads in the second half, including 41-34 with 15:56 left, before SMSU used a 9-0 run to take its first lead of the game at 43-41, following an MJ Delmore field goal at the 13:27 mark.
 
USF would later regain the lead at 52-49 on a Mack Johnson 3-pointer with 6:43 on the clock, before Kirk hit two free throws and Turner Moen scored to give SMSU a 53-52 lead with five minutes remaining.
 
Johnson hit a pair of free throws with 3:14 on the clock to give USF a 57-55 advantage. Following missed jumpers by both teams, SMSU's Shaun Condon drilled a 3-pointer with 2:17 left to push the Mustangs back into the lead at 58-57.
 
USF's Jordan Stotts hit one of two free throws with 2:05 left to tie the game at 58. Condon missed a field goal on SMSU's next possession, but USF turned the ball over on its ensuing possession on a steal by Bartlett.
 
Lee gave the Mustangs a 60-58 lead with 1:01 remaining, but Daniel Hurtt quickly tied the game with a field goal with 34 seconds on the clock.
 
Following a timeout with eight seconds left, SMSU nearly turned the ball over, but Bruggeman—who was falling out of bounds—fired a pass to Bartlett in the left corner. Bartlett then drove the basket and scored the game-winning with 3.7 second left.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will now take two weeks off before returning to action on Jan. 2 at Wayne State.
