SMSU starts season with wins over Jamestown

ROCHESTER, Minn. —
The Southwest Minnesota State softball team started its season off right with a pair of wins over Jamestown (N.D.) 9-1 and 6-2 in the doubleheader at the RCTC Dome Friday.
 
The Mustangs handled the Jimmies in the first game, as they were victorious after five innings by the run-rule. In the second game, SMSU scored four unanswered runs in the top of the sixth inning to earn a 6-2 win and to finish the night 2-0.
 
In the first game, Katelyn Kalkman and Megan Bunting led the Mustangs with two runs scored. Jazmyne Neely and Elissa Reinsma each recorded a pair of hits in the first win.
 
Alex O'Connor allowed just four hits with one run scored in five innings pitched from the circle as she struck out five batters and walked three to start the season 1-0.

In the final game of the doubleheader, Southwest Minnesota State started the scoring in the first inning but Jamestown came back to with a pair of runs to lead 2-1 after the first.

SMSU would eventually tie the game up in the top of the fifth at 2-2 but in the final inning went on to score four-unanswered runs to earn a 6-2 win.

Madisson Chadwick went 3 for 4 from the dish in the second game with a run scored. Alysse Luttmann also went 2 for 3 in the game with two runs scored.

Chadwick pitched the entire game only giving up two runs on four hits as she walked four batters and struck out four.

Southwest Minnesota State will continue nonconference action tomorrow as they play Dakota Wesleyan at the RCTC Dome in a doubleheader with the first pitch at 10 a.m.
