ROCHESTER, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State softball team continued non-conference action in the RCTC Dome today against Dakota Wesleyan and spit the doubleheader with a 11-1 win in the first game and dropped the second game 6-3.
The Mustangs started the first game with confidence as
Alex O'Connor pitched a three up three down to start the first inning. SMSU then went on a seven-run scoring spree to lead 7-0 after the first inning.
In the third inning, the Mustang added to their lead by tagging on three more runs off of DWU's Karlee Jenkins to lead 10-0 going into the fourth.
Both teams added a run in the fourth but SMSU kept the Tigers from scoring again and defeated DWU by the run-rule, 11-1.
Karmann Carroll was a perfect 2 for 2 with a run scored while
Erica Downing,
Kailey Hanson and
Jazmyne Neely all went 1 for 2 in the game.
O'Connor pitched whole game with just two hits and one run given up while striking out four and walking just two batters.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the tables turned as Dakota Wesleyan scored a run before Vanessa Mendez hit a grand slam to put the Tigers up 5-0 after the first.
The Mustangs scored their first run in the top of the next inning but the Tigers game back with a run of their own in the bottom of the third to lead, 6-1.
Neely scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning and off a single by
Kailey Hanson in the sixth to try and cut the deficit but would not finish the comeback as the Mustangs dropped the second game, 6-3.
Neely finished 2 for 3 in the second game with a run scored while Hanson and Carroll both tallied an RBI.
Erin McDurmont pitched just one innings as she gave up five runs on two hits.
Madisson Chadwick finished the game hurling five innings while only allowing one run to score off of two hits. Chadwick also struck out six batters while walking two.
Southwest Minnesota State will have a week off before traveling to West St. Paul, Minn., to play Minnesota Duluth in a non-conference matchup on Feb. 24 with the first pitch at 12 p.m.
