MARSHALL, Minn. — No. 1 St. Cloud State defeated Southwest Minnesota State, 40-3 on Friday night in the PE Gym. Jacob Begin was the lone Mustang to score.
 
SCSU started the match strong with a 6-2 decision coming at 125 pounds from Joel Salomon and the Huskies followed that with a pair of pins coming at 133 pounds from Jarred Oftedahl and Josh Howk at 141 to lead 15-0 after three bouts.
 
Taner Trebley continued the scoring for the Huckies with an 8-3 decision over John Weeding at 149 pounds and Clint Poster and Josh Berg contributed with a tech. fall and a major decision at 157 and 165 pounds, respectfully.
 
Jacob Begin put the first points on the board for the Mustangs at 174 pounds by scoring in the last period to earn a 9-5 decision.
 
SCSU got back on in the winning column at 184 with a major decision before VJ Huilio pinned Ashton Bartlett at 1:42 at 197 pounds. SCSU had a commanding 37-3 lead going into the final bout.
 
Cole Wilson competed hard at the heavyweight as the final bout went to overtime tied at 4-4. Austin Goergen scored the first two points to earn a sudden 6-4 victory and to give the Huskies the final 40-3 victory.
 
SCSU improved to 15-2 overall and remains a perfect 6-0 in the NSIC as SMSU falls to 8-8 overall and 3-4 in the conference. The Mustangs return to the PE gym tomorrow afternoon as they welcome MSU Moorhead for a 3 p.m. start time.
