WAYNE, Neb. — The Wayne State Wildcats were too much for the Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team as it fell, 100-52 Saturday night in Rice Auditorium.
SMSU (3-21, 3-17 NSIC) finished shooting 38 percent (19 for 50) and 50 percent from behind the arc (5 for 10). The Mustangs handled the boards as they held a 31-28 advantage.
Lauren Hedlund led the Mustangs with 11 points.
Ellen Degler and
Annessa Rosch each contributed eight points while Rosch grabbed a team-high five boards.
WSC (23-3, 17-3 NSIC) pushed its winning streak to 14 with the win and finished shooting 58 percent from the field (37 for 63). The Wildcats swiped 17 steals in the win lead by Ashton Yossi and Sadie Murren with four a piece. Jordan Spencer scored a team-high 20 points while Yossi cashed in 18 and dished out four assists. Paige Ballinger and Millie Niggeling both hit double digits with 16 and 12 points, respectfully.
Both teams started the game exchanging baskets but the Wildcats took the lead at 18:35 and held the rest of the half.
The Mustangs kept it with in single digits through the half and was only down by two at 8:40 after a layup by
Tiffany Gehl. The Wildcats wouldn't falter as they pushed their lead to as many as 10 with 4:25 left to play and wouldn't stop there. SMSU cut the deficit down to three with 5:26 left but WSC went on 21-3 run to lead 50-29 going into the break.
The Wildcats wouldn't skip a beat as they held the Mustangs to just two points coming out of the break until
Lauren Hedlund scored at 14:26 to break the slump.
Wayne State controlled the rest of the half and lead by as many as 48 with 1:19.
Southwest Minnesota State will host Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State next weekend in its regular season finale.
