> Box ScoreMARSHALL, Minn. – Concordia-St. Paul shot 61 percent (37 of 61) from the field and used a career-high 17 points and 10 rebounds from Shea Mandi, to earn an 86-63 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball on Friday night.
CU's victory was its first in Marshall since Jan. 16, 2010, snapping a four-game losing streak in Marshall. The Golden Bears improves to 17-10 overall, 13-8 NSIC.
The 61 percent shooting was the highest by an SMSU opponent this season. CU held a 39-25 rebound advantage and held a 58-32 advantage in points in the paint.
SMSU, which dropped its third straight game, falls to 12-15 overall, 8-13 NSIC.
SMSU finished the night shooting 39 percent (24 of 61) from the field, including 7 of 23 from 3-point range. Joey Bartlett led all Mustangs with 14 points on 5 of 10 shooting, including connecting on three 3-pointers. Travis Meinders and Cole Martin added 12 points apiece.
The Golden Bears jumped to an early 18-9 lead in the opening seven minutes and maintained the lead before the Mustangs would slowly cut into the lead. SMSU eventually took the lead, its first since 3-0, at 30-29 following a 3-pointer by Martin with four minutes and 54 seconds remaining in the half.
CU would quickly respond and reel off a 14-2 run over the next four minutes to build its largest lead of the half at 45-33 with 1:18 left in the half. Martin would make a pair of free throws with four seconds on the clock to cut the halftime deficit to 45-35.
CU shot 58 percent (19 of 33) in the first half and held a 20-14 rebound advantage. SMSU shot 39 percent (13 of 33) in the opening half with Martin leading the way with 10 points.
CU opened the second half on a 17-7 in the first seven minutes to open a 62-42 advantage and never looked back in earning its second victory over SMSU this season.
Southwest Minnesota State will conclude the regular season tomorrow night hosting Minnesota State for "Senior Night" starting at 7 p.m.
