Mavericks’ sharp shooting downs Mustangs in regular season finale

MARSHALL, Minn. – Minnesota State shot 50 percent from the floor as it defeated Southwest Minnesota State in the regular season finale, 83-64 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball.

SMSU (22-6, 17-5 NSIC) finished shooting 34 percent from the floor and 30 percent from 3-point range. Lauren Hedlund led all Mustangs with 22 points and also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Annessa Rosch and Hope Bonlander made their mark as they scored 18 and 13 points, respectfully.

MSU (3-23, 3-19 NSIC) finished shooting 50 percent from the floor as Lexie Ulfers cashed in 21 points for the Mavericks. Ashley Olson and Aubrey Davis both contributed as they scored 14 and 11 points, respectfully. Sammie Delzotto lead all Mavericks with seven rebounds.

MSU started the game with a 10-0 run before Bonlander put the Mustangs on the board with a layup at 17:20 in the first half. The Mavericks continued to shoot the ball well as they led by double figures the majority of the half.

SMSU cut the lead down to just six with 4:10 left in the half but MSU pushed its lead back to 12 to lead at the half, 41-29. The Mavericks shot 51 percent in the half as Olson and Ulfers lead the team with 12 points each.

After the break, SMSU came out with more energy and cut the Mavericks lead down to eight with 14:09 after a pair of free throws by Hedlund.

Davis started the scoring run for the Mavricks as they pushed their lead 18  at 10:19 after Delzotto scored a layup to make the score 58-40.

The Mavericks continued to hold their lead down the stretch and close the regular season with a win.

Southwest Minnesota State will travel to Northern State on Wednesday in the opening round of the NSIC Sanford Health tournament.
