MINOT, N.D. — The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team defeated Minot State, 25-15 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference wrestling Friday night.
The dual start at 174 pounds as
Jacob Begin earned his eighth pin of the season as the senior Jon Wilson at 5:56 to give the Mustangs a 6-0 start.
Brody Goens added to the Mustang lead as he scored bonus points in a major decsion over Kobina Henriques, 12-0.
Minot State got on the board at 197 pounds as Taylor Barstad won on an 8-5 decision over
Tristan Ezell.
In the heavyweight,
Cole Wilson scored points for the Mustangs in a close, 3-2 decision over Mitchell Eull to earn his 24th win of the season.
Landyn VanOverbeke recorded an early pin over Anthony Battle at 1:04 in the 125 pound dual to give SMSU a 19-3 lead half way through.
Minot State would start to cut the lead down over the next four duals as it recorded four consecutive decision wins to pull within four points with just the 157 pound dual left.
In the final showdown at 157,
Colton Vekved waited until the final period to pin Devin Combs at 6:10 to give the Mustangs a dramatic 25-15 win.
