East Stroudsburg Box ScoreCLERMONT, Fla., — The Southwest Minnesota State softball team improved to 5-1 in the Springs Games with an 11-5 victory over Lees McRae (N.C.) before a 4-3 win over East Stroudsburg (Penn.) on Tuesday afternoon at the NTC Softball Facility.
The Mustangs started the first game against Lees McRae with a two run second inning after
Taylor Chavez singled to center field to score
Kailey Hanson. Chavez stole home in a double steal attempt later in the inning to put SMSU up 2-0.
In the fourth,
Taylor Koloc doubled through the left side to score
Karmann Carroll before
Katelyn Kalkman hit a single to score Koloc. The Mustang led 4-0 going into the bottom of the fourth.
The Bobcats found three runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the Mustang lead to, 4-3.
In the fifth, SMSU scored the four runs back after Carroll doubled to center field to score
Jazmyne Neely and
Madisson Chadwick.
Chavez doubled down the left-field line at the next at bat to score Carroll before Koloc drilled one to center field to bring Chavez around to score and increase the lead to 8-3.
In the sixth inning, Lees McRae tagged on two more but not before SMSU came back in the seventh to score a pair of runs after a Koloc doubled to score
Tristine Vandeman and Carroll to cement the Mustang 11-5 victory.
Koloc led the Mustangs offense as she went 4 for 4 from the plate with four RBI's and two runs scored. Carroll finished going 2 for 2 with two RBI's and three runs scored while Kalkman finished 3 for five with a pair of RBI's.
Alex O'Connor hurled a complete game and picked up her fifth win of the season. The sophomore gave up just three hits and struck out six batters while walking five.
In the second game on Tuesday afternoon, the Mustangs started the scoring in the second inning against East Stroudsburg as
Taylor Koloc doubled down the left-field line to score
Karmann Carroll.
Taylor Chavez drove in Koloc at the next at bat to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead after two innings.
ESU retaliated with a pair of runs itself in the bottom half of the inning to tied it up at 2-2.
In the fourth, the Mustangs struck again as
Taylor Chavez singled into left field to score Carroll from third, but again the Warriors came back with a run in the home half of the inning to keep the game tied at 3-3.
Both teams were kept scoreless until
Alysse Luttmann reached first on a dropped-third strike to lead off the Mustangs in the top of the seventh. Luttmann stole second before getting to third after a Kalkman sac-bunt.
Micki Williams then drove in the go-ahead run with a single to right field to score Luttmann.
The Mustangs held off the Warriors to complete the day sweep as
Erin McDurmont earned her first collegiate win.
McDurmont threw the whole game as she gave up seven hits and three runs while striking out three and walking a pair of batters in the win.
The Southwest Minnesota State softball team improves to 8-4 on the season (5-1 in the Spring Games) and will play Ohio Dominican at 2 p.m. (CDT) before playing DIII University of St. Thomas (Minn.) at 6 p.m. (CDT).
