California (Penn.) Box Score CLERMONT, Fla., — The Southwest Minnesota State softball suffered a pair of losses against Northwood University (Mich.) 9-3 and California Univeristy (Pa.) 12-0 on Thursday afternoon at the Foundation Academy Complex.
SMSU moves to 8-8 on the season and 5-5 in the Spring Games.
Southwest Minnesota State faced Northwood (Mich.) in its first game of the day and NU struck first with a pair of runs in the second inning followed by a run in the third to lead 3-0 after three innings of play.
The Timberwolves added to their lead in the fifth inning and sixth when they scored three runs in each to lead 9-0 going into the bottom of the sixth.
The Mustangs finally got on the board after
Jazmyne Neely singled through the right side to score
Megan Bunting from third.
The Mustangs scored a couple more as
Alysse Luttmann crossed the plate on a wild pitch before
Madisson Chadwick doubled to right center to score
Taylor Chavez and the final Mustang run of the game.
Neely and Chadwick were the lone Mustangs to record an RBI in the loss.
Bunting finished going 1 for 1 with a run scored while Chavez went 1 for 3 with a run scored. Chadwick added two hits in her three at bats.
Alex O'Connor pitched a complete game giving up 15 hits and nine runs while striking out two batters and walking one. She moves to 5-4 on the season with the loss.
In the second game of the day, SMSU faced California (PA) and the Vulcans did not waste anytime scoring as they exploded in the first inning with 10 runs.
CAL added a pair of runs in the third inning and kept the Mustangs off the board to earn a 12-0 victory by the run-rule after five innings.
Jazmyne Neely recorded the only two hits in the game.
Erin McDurmont started the game and received the loss as she gave up five hits and six runs in the one out she pitched. She falls to a 1-2 record on the season.
Southwest Minnesota State will face Central Missouri at 12 p.m. (CDT) and Marian (Ind.) at 2 p.m. (CDT) in its final day of the Spring Games.
