Mustangs split final day of Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla., —
The Southwest Minnesota State softball team concluded its Spring Games with a 3-2 loss to Central Missouri before defeating Marian (Ind.) 7-6 in the final game on Friday afternoon.
 
In the first game on Friday, the Jennies from Central Missouri scored a quick three runs in the first inning to lead 3-0.
 
Both teams were held scoreless until the final inning when the Mustangs scored a pair of runs after Alysse Luttmann blasted a homer to left center to cut the deficit to 3-2.
 
SMSU failed to score another run and fell 3-2.
 
Alex O'Connor pitched a complete game as she gave up 10 hits and three runs while striking out five batters and not recording a walk in the loss.
 
Megan Bunting finished going 1 for 2 from the box while Madisson Chadwick went 2 for 3. Alysse Luttmann recorded the only RBI's in the game for the Mustangs with her two-run homerun, which was also her first career homerun.
 
In the second and final game of the Spring Games, SMSU took on Marian (Ind.).
 
The Mustang started the scoring in the first inning after Karmann Carroll hit a base-clearing double to left center to score Kailey Hanson, Madisson Chadwick and Alysse Luttmann to give SMSU a 3-0 lead.
 
Marian scored a run in the bottom of the first inning but SMSU came back in the top of the following inning after Luttmann sacrificed to score Taylor Chavez.
 
Marian started to cut into the Mustangs 4-1 lead in the bottom half of the second inning as they scored a run followed by a run in the third and three runs in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead going into the sixth inning.
 
The SMSU offense bounced back in the top of the sixth as Chavez smashed a two-run homer to center field to tie the game 6-6. It was Chavez's first homerun at SMSU.
 
In the top of the seventh, Carroll joined the homerun club as she hit a homerun over the left-center fence—also her first career homerun—to give the Mustangs a 7-6 lead going into the bottom of the seventh
 
Alex O'Connor started the final inning striking out the first batter and went on to strike out the last two batters to close out the game.
 
O'Connor gave up 10 hits and seven runs while striking nine and walking four. She leaves the Spring Games with a 6-5 overall record so far this season.
 
Carroll finished 2 for 4 with four RBI's with a run scored. Luttmann went 1 for 2 with an RBI and one run scored. Kailey Hanson finished the game going 2 for 3 with a run scored.
 
Southwest Minnesota State finished the Spring Games with 6-6 record and a 9-9 overall record. The Mustangs will return to Marshall and host Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) in a doubleheader on March 18 with the first pitch at 2 p.m.
