MARSHALL, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State softball team swept Dakota Wesleyan in a non-conference doubleheader with a 3-1 win in game one followed with a 6-2 victory in game two on Thursday. It was SMSU's home opener.
SMSU (11-9) started the scoring after
Elissa Reinsma crossed home plate on a passed ball with the bases loaded.
Kailey Hanson continued the scoring as she singled through the left side to score
Madisson Chadwick from third. The Mustangs added its final run on a double steal as
Jazmyne Neely scored to give SMSU a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
DWU (5-13) scored its only run in the top of the fourth after Natalie Gutierrez doubled to right center
Kailey Hanson led the Mustangs in game one finishing 2 for 3 with an RBI. Reinsma finished 1 for 2 with a run scored while Chadwick and Neely both scored a run.
Alex O'Connor pitched a complete game giving up six hits with one run while striking out four batters.
In the final game of the doubleheader, Neely drove in the first run of the game after she singled to score
Katelyn Kalkman.
Taylor Koloc reached on a fielding error by the third baseman to score Neely from third and to give the Mustangs a 2-0 start.
The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth after Vanessa Mendez doubled to left field to knot the game up at 2-2.
SMSU bounced back after
Alysse Luttmann singled to left to score
Karmann Carroll and advanced to third on a fielding error.
Kalkman singled up the middle at her next at bat to score Luttmann and give the Mustangs a 4-2 advantage going into the fifth.
SMSU tagged on a pair of runs in the fifth after Hanson doubled to left field to score Neely and
Erica Downing to cement the sweep.
Hanson finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs while Neely went 1 for 2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Kalkman and Luttmann both scored runs for the Mustangs in the win.
Erin McDurmont picked up her second win of the season and is now 2-2 as the freshman struck out three while walking just one batter in 3 2/3 innings pitched.
Southwest Minnesota State will open up Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play next Tuesday hosting Sioux Falls.
