TUCSON, Ariz. – Jimmy Callahan tossed a strong 6 2/3 innings, recording a career-high eight strikeouts to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 5-3 victory over Concordia-St. Paul on Thursday night at the Kino Sports Complex.
The victory was the second straight for SMSU, which improves to 3-6 overall. CU drops to 1-1 on the season.
Jimmy Callahan (1-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks to earn the win, while
Cody Curtis recorded his first career save with an outstanding 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief, allowing just one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.
CU took a 1-0 lead in the third inning taking advantage of a failed pickoff attempt to score an unearned run.
SMSU answered in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with no outs following a walk to
Derek Branson and back-to-back singles by
Cole VanderBeek and
Brian Redemske.
Patrick Rients then tied the game with a fielder's choice to score Branson. SMSU would later load the bases with two outs, but failed to score keeping the game tied.
SMSU took the lead in the bottom of the fourth as
Noah Bluth singled and stole second base. A ground out and walk put runners on the corners, before VanderBeek laid down a perfect bunt single to score Bluth and put SMSU in the lead at 2-1.
The Mustangs added to the lead in the sixth as Branson walked to lead off the frame and moved to second on a sac bunt by VanderBeek. A single by Redemske put runners on the corners, before Rients ripped an RBI single to give SMSU a 3-1 lead.
Austin Stubbs then delivered a run-scoring single to score Redemske, before
Shane Sellner capped the inning with a two-out RBI single to give SMSU a 5-1 advantage.
The Golden Bears cut into the lead in the top of the seventh putting together three hits and a sac fly to push across two runs and cut the Mustang lead to 5-3, but Curtis allowed just one base runner in the final two innings to secure the win.
Redemske led an 11-hit Mustang attack with three hits, while VanderBeek collected two hits.
Southwest Minnesota State will play a pair of games tomorrow taking on Augustana at 2:30 p.m. CDT and Concordia-St. Paul at 9:30 p.m. CDT
