MARSHALL, Minn. - Mitch Wurm tossed his first career nine-inning shutout to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 3-0 victory over Minot State in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at Alumni Field. Minot State won the opener 4-3.
It was the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opening games for SMSU, which is now 8-10 overall, 1-1 NSIC. Minot State is 5-12 overall, 2-4 NSIC.
Wurm (2-1), who tossed eight shutout innings on March 14 versus Bemidji State, allowed just six hits with four strikeouts and three walks. He finished the game throwing 114 pitches, including 75 for strikes.
SMSU opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Brian Redemske doubled to start the inning and came around to score on a ground out by Patrick Rients.
The Mustangs added to the lead in the fourth as Austin Stubbs worked a lead-off walk and later scored on a sac fly by Shane Sellner.
In the sixth, SMSU made it 3-0 as Noah Bluth reached on a fielding error and moved to third on bunt single by Redemske. Bluth then came around to score on a sac fly by Jason Minett to extend the lead to three runs.
Wurm then worked a quick seventh inning, retiring all three batters on just four pitches. He then stranded one runner in the eighth and two runners in the ninth to secure the victory.
SMSU finished with six hits in game with Redemske finishing 2 for 4.
In the opener, The Beavers took advantage of a two-out Mustang error to plate a pair of unearned runs to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
SMSU used its own two-out rally to tie the game in the second inning. Brandan Alfson singled with two outs and was followed by a walk to Shane Sellner. Cole VanderBeek then drilled a two-run double down the left field line to tie the game at 2.
SMSU took its first lead in the third as Rients reached on a hit by pitch with one out and then stole second. Stubbs then came through with a run-scoring single to make the score 3-2.
Minot State answered in the top of the fourth on a one-out double by Jesse Goertzen, who later scored on a two-out wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3.
Minot State then regained the lead in the sixth with a double and a single to build a 4-3 advantage.
SMSU threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, putting runners on first and second with one out. MISU's third baseman stopped the rally with a diving stop on a ground ball and promptly stepped on third and threw to first for an inning-ending double play.
Jake Matthys (0-4) tossed a complete game for SMSU, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
Josh Larsen (1-0) earned the complete game victory for Minot State, giving up two earned runs on five hits with a pair of walks and six strikeouts.
Alfson finished 2 for 3 to lead the SMSU offense.
The two teams conclude the four-game series tomorrow starting at 12 p.m.
