MARSHALL, Minn. - Southwest Minnesota State split a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader with Concordia-St. Paul on Tuesday at Mustang Field, winning the opener 8-2, before CU rallied for a 10-7 victory in game two.
Â
In game one, SMSU (14-12, 3-3 NSIC)Â jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and cruised to its third straight victory. In the first inning,
Jazmyne Neely came through with a two-out, two-run single to give the Mustangs an early 2-0 lead.
Â
SMSU pushed the lead to 6-0 in the third, scoring four runs on three hits. Neely hit a run-scoring single to make it 3-0, before
Karmann Carroll, who missed the previous four games with an injury, connected on a two-run double to make the score 5-0. Carroll later scored on a wild pitch to push the margin to 6-0.
Â
CU (8-21, 2-4 NSIC)Â picked up a run in the fourth, before SMSU answered with a pair of runs in the fifth.
Taylor Koloc delivered a run-scoring double to score Carroll and then came around to cross the plate later on a wild pitch to make the score 8-1.
Â
The run support was plenty for SMSU starter
Alex O'Connor (10-6), who tossed the first four innings, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks.
Erin McDurmont closed out the game tossing the final three innings to record the save.
Â
Madisson Chadwick, Neely and Carroll all finished with two hits apiece to pace SMSU's nine-hit attack.
Â
In game two,
Kailey Hanson gave the Mustangs an early lead with an RBI double in the first inning to score Chadwick.
Â
CU tied the game in the second, but SMSU regained the lead in the third on a two-out RBI single by Neely to plate
Elissa Reinsma.
Â
The Golden Bears tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth, but again SMSU had an answer to go back ahead with another clutch two-out hit. With the bases loaded, Chadwick drilled a bases-clearing double down the right field line and put SMSU back in front at 5-2.
Â
The lead wouldn't last long as CU countered with three runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 5-5. CU then pushed across five runs, four unearned, in the top of the sixth off of reliever Chadwick, to build a 10-5 lead.
Â
SMSU cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Neely belted a two-run homer, but it wasn't enough as the Mustangs failed to mount a rally in the seventh.
Â
Chadwick (2-4), the third SMSU pitcher of the game, suffered the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on one hit, but walked three batters.
Â
SMSU closed the game with 11 hits, with Neely finishing 3 for 4 with three RBIs, while Chadwick went 2 for 4 with three RBIs.
Southwest Minnesota State will host NCAA Division I South Dakota State tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
