SMSU drops second straight on Sunday afternoon

TUCSON, Ariz. –
Northern State jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and smacked out 14 hits, including eight extra base hits, and went on to earn a 15-2 victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday afternoon at the Tucson Invitational at the Kino Sports Complex.

NSU (3-3) took advantage of two walks and a dropped fly ball with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.

The Wolves added to the lead in the third inning pushing across three runs on three hits to make the score 5-0.

SMSU's Austin Stubbs crushed a two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 5-2, but NSU answered with four runs in the fourth inning to put the game away.

SMSU (1-4) closed the game with nine hits with Stubbs and Ryan Engels each finishing with two hits each.

Joe Axelson (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound for SMSU, tossing three-plus innings, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Southwest Minnesota State continues the Tucson Invitational on Monday taking on Minot State University at 9 p.m. CDT.
