Mustangs edged out by Pumas; complete comeback over Knights

CLERMONT, Fla., - The Southwest Minnesota State softball team split games today, suffering a loss to St. Joseph's College 5-3 before coming back to defeat Queens College (N.Y.) 7-5 in the Spring Games on Monday afternoon.

In the first game, St. Joseph's College jumped on the board first in the second inning with a run before adding another run in the top of the third to lead 2-0 after three innings of play.

The Mustangs couldn't find a runner to cross the plate until the bottom of the sixth when they scored three that was keyed when Alysse Luttmann scored on a wild pitch. Shortly after, Jazmyne Neely doubled to right center to score Madison Chadwick from third.

Kailey Hanson doubled to left center in the next at bat to score Neely from third and to lead 3-2 going into the final inning.

The Pumas had two runners in scoring position before Kylie Hirchak singled up the middle to score the two runners and to gain the lead, 4-3.

Two batters later, Emma Littrell drove a run in with a single into to increase the score 5-3. The Mustangs couldn't put anything together in the bottom half of the inning as they went 3-up 3-down to drop their first game of the Spring Games.

Alex O'Connor lost her first game of the Spring Games as she struck out four batters, walked five and gave up five runs on seven hits.

In the second game of the day, SMSU faced Queens College (N.Y.) and exploded in the sixth inning to post a 7-5 comeback to split the games on Monday.

The Knights scored the first run of the game in the opening inning and lead 1-0 until they opened the scoring up in the fifth and sixth inning after scoring four more runs to hold a 5-0 lead going into the sixth.

Alex O'Connor started the big sixth inning comeback with a single to left field to drive in Katelyn Kalkman and to put the Mustangs on the board.

Jazmyne Neely continued the scoring as she singled up the middle to score Megan Bunting from third before Kailey Hanson doubled to left center to score Neely.

Alysse Luttmann walked to score Hanson and tied the game at 5-5 before Bunting walked to score Karmann Carroll and to take the lead.

O'Connor singled to the second baseman to score Carroll but Luttmann was thrown out at home trying to score to end the ending.

O'Connor closed out the inning striking out two of the three batter to complete the comeback.

O'Connor had a big game as the sophomore came in in the last two innings to earn her fourth win of the season with two strikeouts and only gave up two hits and a run. While in the box, she went 2 for 2 with two RBI's.

Hanson went 1 for 1 with an RBI and a run scored while both Neely and Karmann had an RBI.

Southwest Minnesota State moves to 6-4 this season (3-1 in Spring Games) and will face Lees-McRae (N.C.) at 12 p.m. (CDT) before East Stroudsburg (Penn.) at 2 p.m. (CDT)
