DULUTH, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State softball team split with Minnesota Duluth falling in the first game 8-1 before earning a 3-2 win in game two on Saturday at Malosky Stadium.

SMSU (18-18, 7-7 NSIC) started the scoring in the top of the first inning that keyed from an Alysse Luttmann single. Luttmann stole second and moved up to third after a throwing error from the catcher before Madisson Chadwick singled to left field to score Luttmann and give the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead.

UMD (23-16, 7-9 NSIC) responded scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and went on to score two more runs in the third inning from a home run and followed it with three runs in the fourth and an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.

Alex O'Connor suffered the loss after pitching a complete game giving up 12 hits, eight runs (five earned) and walking a batter.

Karmann Carroll led the Mustang offense finishing 2 for 3 from the plate while Luttmann scored the lone run from Chadwick's RBI.

In game two, the Mustangs started the scoring in the second inning after Taylor Koloc blasted a triple down the right field line to score Carroll and went on to cross home on a wild pitch to give SMSU a 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs used their big bats as they hit another home run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 2-1.

SMSU pushed another run cross in the top of the sixth as Katelyn Kalkman started the inning off with a walk and advanced to second after Luttmann singled on a bunt. A couple batters later, Kailey Hanson singled down the right field line to score Kalkman from third.

UMD tried to comeback in the bottom of the seventh with a run, but could not pull anything together.

Southwest Minnesota State will continue on its road trip to St. Cloud State tomorrow for a doubleheader with the first pitch at noon.
